The Minear Monster strikes again

Written by Starlynk Bermuda at 09:42 22/11-2016

Before the Tour we were named "The Scary Bermudians". We kind of laughed about that. Yes, the team was better than last season with Minear and Pancoast on the squad, but still, last season we didn't score ANY points and Nederlandse Tour features most of the greatest sprinters in the world. Surely, a rather mediocre hill sprinter wouldn't be able to challenge for the win. Not even in top form. Yes, we hoped for a top 9 spot and dreamed about the podium and perhaps the YC jersey but we didn't expect THIS to happen.

But Alex Minear proved us wrong once again. After cannibalizing the Kangaroo Tour last season, he proved to be an incredible tour rider in The Netherlands as well. Surely he didn't win any stage, compared to 3 stage wins Down Under, but hey, this is Nederlandse Tour, the tour every sprinter dreams of winning!

Minear took the first big step with an incredible prologue (ending 2nd) and then the team guided Minear past all the crashes in the second and third stage, where a bunch of the favourites lost their hopes and dreams. Then on the hilly stage to Maastricht, Minear grabbed the leader's jersey with another 2nd place. There was only one second between him and his main challenger Wesley Goldstone, but Minear knew he only had to keep his eye on Goldstone in the final 2 stages, and that's what he did... He finished both stages 1 place ahead of Goldstone so even a scary off day in the final stage couldn't interfere with the young Bermudian winning the biggest sprinting tour in OCM.

Wow, just wow. We set out with this goal many seasons ago: some day winning Nederlandse Tour with an all-Bermudian squad! And to do it this season already is just incredible. Time to think up new goals, but for now... party in Bermuda!!!
